I would like to stand and be counted as someone that heard about Biden's drop out from WaPo and local news alerts, and I learned about the assassination attempt from Twitch chat (apps were a lil slow on that one).
I can't believe you didn't mention the Supernatural meme on Tumblr. That's how 90% of Tumblrinas get their breaking news these days. Whenever I see Dean and Cas trending, I'm like, uh oh, what happened now?
Great write up. I think despite the silliness that is getting your news from meme pages, it’s a natural progression of a growing distrust of the mainstream news outlets.
I found out at 1:50 pm by glancing idly at my phone during a tour of Stephen Holl's Rhinebeck atelier (open to the pubic for Upstate Art Weekend), seeing the alerts from the Guardian and the Times and immediately gasping "Biden dropped out!" to everyone. Later an older couple came up to me and told me that even though they didn't know my name, they would always remember me as the one who told them about Biden.
As I am not young or hip, this blows my mind . . . sort of. Also seems very much the way things are these days. And interesting the way some X accounts are subverting the Nazi bar that X has become. Thanks.
I don’t really use twitter but I found out from aplasticplant on instagram 😂
I don't get these people. I learn about breaking news the old fashioned way: Pépito's Twitter feed https://x.com/PepitoTheCat/status/1812365412350210387
That copypasta shit is hard to read and really, really stupid. People find that fun?
Yeah! I think they can be funny :)
This is a story made for me to read. 😂
Omg THE online news journalist of our time!!! Ty for reading!! ur an inspiration 🙌😭
For what it’s worth, I found it out from a Substack Note by Chris Geidner, the Law Dork

I’m on Tik Tok half my life but I found out from an NBC news alert. Like a total boomer. 🤦♀️🤦♀️
Me when I'm thinking of starting a newsletter.
loved this.

I heard about it in a group chat but it took another 15 minutes for FoxNews to announce it (don’t judge me — it was on in the waiting room I was in).

I found out the news the old fashioned way: the manager at T-Mobile saying it out loud while we added a new line to our plan.
