As the U.S. government seeks to enact stricter controls over online speech, TikTok users are adopting more coded 'algospeak' to criticize and resist the government
They are absolutely smart! It’s a platform with over a billion users used by academics, historians, activists, journalists, scientists, and brilliant people all over to communicate and share knowledge. As the Pew report recently found, it is the *only* major social app that skews liberal. No social media app is a monolith but let’s not buy into right wing talking points falsely claiming TikTok is a bunch of uneducated teens. It’s not!
That hasn't been my experience. I set out to post the dumbest content possible and TikTok was where it succeeded. My content is completely neutral politically.
I would encourage you not to universalize your single experience! TikTok is a massive global communication platform :) there’s a lot more on there than you might realize!
I mean, I'm just as fluent in it as you are. I've gotten the certs and been to the offices. It's not for a lack of exploring over the years. I'd like to see some examples of what you're describing that hasn't been dumbed-down to fit the platform. I'm not arguing with you, I'd legit like to see what you are seeing.
I don’t know what certifications you’re talking about or how visiting their offices would educate you on the landscape of the user base, but definitely take a read through any of the reporting I’ve done on TikTok used as a tool for activism and communication and speech. If you go back through my WaPo and NYT links you can find plenty of stories. I think especially of all the Palestinian journalists who have been able to reach people through the app and reproductive justice activists. It’s an app with over a billion users, it’s not a monolith and we should be careful not to parrot right wing talking points about those billion users being majority uneducated when that’s not the case. Godspeed! 🫡
Cute winter boots has some of the worst direct action advice I’ve ever seen, I’m torn between “this is so bad it can only be feds” and “this is so bad it could only be inexperienced folks.”
Cute winter boots 🥰
Just bought your book. Extremely late adopter here.
I hope you like it!! Thank you so much for picking it up 💓
"TikTok users are smart" - I think I've done a pretty good job of disproving this theory.

We seem to have a fundamental disagreement on the definition of intelligence, but I understand your point of view.
